Alternative Tour de France – 10 day cycle tour,
France
Activities : Mountain Biking
Destination : FRANCE
Fitness : Medium
Minimum amount to be raised : Approx £1800
ACTIVITY DESCRIPTION
This is the other Tour de France, a journey by bicycle across the
width of the country of wine, food and history. During your ride
you’ll take both the Bordeaux and Cotes du Rhone wine regions,
the feudal towns and fortress of the Central Massif and Provence’s
rolling hills and castles.
We’ll begin our ride through France in the Bordeaux wine
country at the village of St Emilion which has been perched high
above the vineyards since the middle-ages. As you pedal upstream
along the Dordogne River, first chalk cliffs start rising above
the vineyards, then the vineyards start thinning out and castles
and fortified villages take their place clinging to the cliffs.
We’ll spend a couple of days in this enchanting place bedding
down in Limuelie and Rocamadour (considered to be one of Frances
two prettiest villages) Leaving Rocamadour the dry oak forests,
deep gorges and numerous castles of the Central Massif fill your
day enroute to St Enimie.
St Enimie is deep in the Tarn Gorge, renowned for its scenic splendour
and medieval villages. You have a free day here to enjoy some white
water canoeing or people watching from a street side café.
Climbing our of the Tarn Gorge’s far end, we roll along the
Corniche des Cevennes enjoying its high panoramas, before dropping
down to the town of Anduz and the start of our explorations of
Provence. We’ll spend our last day on the bikes exploring
the many wonders of this region from the ancient Roman aqueduct
Pont du Gard to the castles of Tarasco. Discover the best cycling
France has to offer in the summer of 2005.
This is what we love about France, the food the wine the cheese
and the culture and history. This tour is a great way to see the
real France and to sample some of its real treasures. Rather than
just cycling for hours every day, this tour allows for the cultural
side of our natural temptations. This is a great tour for those
who want more than an ordinary tour. It has mass appeal to people
of all ages, cycling experiences and backgrounds.
